David Dragonfly was born in Kalispell and raised on the Blackfeet Reservation. He attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in New Mexico where he studied with Otellic Lolama and Larry Desjarlais. He obtained his BFA at the University of Montana, emphasizing in painting and studied with Don Bunse, founder of collagraph technique printmaking.
David designs much of his work around his Blackfeet and Assiniboine heritage. Dragonfly also makes traditional hand drums by scraping elk hide and using local paints. The war clubs he carves are from of black pipestone, indigenous to the Northern Plains.
